Smart Phones
Smartphones are Mobile Phones with capabilities more similar to Computers than feature phones.
Although there is no official distinction between feature phones and feature phones, one significant difference would be the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) on smartphones. This helps the integration of third party applications.
They usually have advanced features such as of portable media players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. Modern smartphones also include high-resolution touchscreens and web browsers that display standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites. High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband.
Note-worthy mobile operating systems used by smartphones are Google's Android, Apple's iOS, Nokia's Symbian, RIM's BlackBerry OS, Samsung's Bada, Microsoft's Windows Phone, Hewlett-Packard's webOS, and embedded Linux distributions such as Maemo and MeeGo.
The two Smartphones that will be compared today will be Apple’s Iphone and Google’s Android, which are arguable the two leading products on in the market today.

To be exact, the two phones go by the name “Iphone 5 iOS6” and “Samsung 19300 Galaxy S3.”
Being released early, in May 2012, the Samsung will be analysed first.
The Samsung Galaxy is 4.8 inches in size, and 0.34 inches slim and 133g in weight, which means it’s a bit large in size, but some find it easier to type on the screen this way. It’s about preference.
It comes in an array of colors which include Pebble blue, Marble white, Amber brown, Garnet red, Sapphire black and Titanium grey.
Its rectangle in shape, with very rounded corners and has a few buttons, the main being the home button located at the bottom of the screen, its lack of buttons is due to it being primarily a touch screen device.
It operates on an Android Operating system. Different models can be bought with modified memory, so to help save on cost. The memory options are 16GB, 32GB and with the input of the card slot the memory can be boosted to 64 GB, with 1GM of Ram on all models.
It has a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor allowing it to go fast. HSDPA speed is 21 Mbps; and the HSUPA speed reaching up to 5.76 Mbps.
The Battery can last up to 790 hours, 11.40 Hours when calling.
Like most Phones it has Bluetooth, can be plugged into a USB port if you have the right cord and connects to WIFI.
It also has a NFC which translates to near-field communication, or as its called on the Samsung Galaxy;
"The S-Beam." This allows the transaction of certain media and allows people to share easily if they are in a short range. You can also pay for purchases, which is a newly added feature.
Samsung put a lot of focus into the sharing media aspect of their Mobile Phone. The phone can connect to other appliances such as computer and Tv's wireless-ly, share information and can even act as a second remote.
This goes under the name "All share Cast/Play."
The screen has a resolution of 1280x720 with 306 ppi. It uses a HD Super AMOLED touchscreen with 16m Colours.
Samsung Galaxy 3 has two Cameras, one for the front and back.
The Mobile uses an 8-megapixel camera in the rear, as well as crystal-clear 1080p HD video. They do well in low light than when compared to previous phones.
In the area of front camera, which is used primarily for video chat, uses a 1.9-megapixel camera that gives a 720p HD video quality.
Photos and videos can be edited on the Phone with tools such as editing/cropping/sharing at hand.
It also has a Buddy Photo Share that recognizes the faces and will tag them for easy share.
Call quality has a lot to do with which Network you use and the caller’s location, and there have been a couple of complaints of low call quality and a significant sound drop when talking, but these could be from poor maintenance rather than actual technical difficulty.
It also has loudspeakers that allow you to project your music and hear ring tones.
Aside from calling the SGS3 uses SMS and can predict text input with its Swype system. It can access the internet, using Google Chrome as a browser. This allows the use of Email and access of Social Network sites. Of course being a Google product, you’ll automatically connect to Gmail, which is up to you to decide whether or not this is a bad thing.
The SGS3 can store all forms of media; anything from photos, videos, music and games. It has built in clock and maps which rely on Google Maps and is fairy reliable.
It has inbuilt vibrations to alert you incoming messages and news.
Another interesting feature is voice control feature that allows you to talk and write texts, notes, emails with your voice. You can also use voice control to locate things on your phone.
For a more advance voice control feature you use "S Voice" which can do anything from changing your alarm to doing a Google search for you.
Other examples of the Phones intelligent features is a feature that recognizes your typing pattern and will adjust the keyboard to your particular typing patter. Also there is an eye sensory that will turn the screen off if you aren't looking at the screen.
You can buy/download other Apps for other features, and the industry for Android specified apps is growing rapidly, but this relies more upon the people than the Mobile phone for better development. So God speed good men...

Well now that we are finally done we can move unto the Apples Iphone 5. Release in September 2012.
The two phones are both very similar and different in aspects.
The Iphone, back in 2007 set the standard for all Smartphones and because of this other touch screens have mirrored its features, but people will always play the game slightly differently,
which is where the differences come in.
The Iphone 5 is a bit smaller than the Samsung, and is 4 inches high, but is slimmer being 0.30 inches thin.
It weighs 112g. Again the same problems are presented by having a large phone, but people still complain that the Iphone 5 is too small to type on, so its safe to say that they could probably go a bit bigger.
Its Rectangle in shape, but its edges are straighter than the Samsung allowing it to retain its shape more and making the corners slightly sharper. They only come in two colors; Black/Slate, White/Silver.
Again like the Samsung it has as little buttons as possible, with the big main button under the screen, with its symbolic square symbol. This is because the Iphone 5 is primarily a touch Screen Phone.
It operates on iO6 with an Apple A6 Processor. That means that the DC-HSDPA speed is at Mbps, the HSDPA is at 21 Mbps, HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps and the LTE is at 100 Mbps.
Yet again its alike to the Samsung in that you can buy different models with different memory which are 16Gb, 32GB and 64GB, all models having 1GB of RAM. Although, the 64GB is built in rather than needing a card slot.Another aspect of memory is the Icloud system that allows a memory back up to an online storage. Its mostly efficient and helps if you loose your data. Every time you sync your Phone, the Phone is also backed up to Icloud.
The battery last up to 225 hours when on standby and 8 hours when talking.
Again the Phone can use Bluetooth and can be connected to a USB port. The new Apple5 phone now uses a new port, so people who have old Iphone charges need to upgrade.
One thing that should be kept in mind is that, like every Apple product, Apple Appliances work best with other Apple appliances. This means that when backing up your phone, backing it up to a Apple computer works best. You can sync it with another computer, but there can be complications. All the music on your phone are going to have to be on Itunes, but getting these things sorted out isn't too much of a hassle.
The resolution of the IPhone 5 is 640 x 1136 pixels, which is 326 ppi. It uses a LED-Backlit IPS TFT, Capacitive touchscreen with 16m Colors.
Like the Samsung it has two Cameras. One for the front and back.
The rear camera is a 8-megapixel camera in the rear, as well as crystal-clear 1080p HD video.
The front Camera runs at 1.2 megapixels, but will give you a 720 HD quality video.
Has inbuilt editing tools such as editing/cropping/sharing but apps can be purchased for more advanced features.
Like i said with the SGS3 call quality has a lot to do with which Network you use and the caller’s location rather than the phone itself. The Iphone 5 call quality has improved from later models.
Like all other modern Phones, the Iphone5 can call, receive and send text and with the Imessage, you can even see if the other person is typing. Also it can send/receive Emails and access Safari, which widens the possibility with social networking sites.
Recently Apple stopped using Google Maps for their mapping system as they distance themselves from their competition, and their new map system; Maps iOS is severely lacking and misleading. It will need to be refined before any actual trust can be placed in it.
Aside from this the Iphone 5 has many other features which include music, videos photos, games and books. When music and videos have to be downloaded from Itunes, Apps downloaded from the App store and books purchased at the Newsstand, otherwise for these particular types of media, they cannot be downloaded else where on your phone.
Photos, although can be saved from the internet much like you would on a computer.
Features the Iphone 5 have include built in vibrations to alert incoming messages news, and Voice Control or "Siri" which seems "S Voice" by Samsung copied quite closely.
As i described before, you simply state any question and she will answer using a variety of Google searches and in-built knowledge. It also has the ability to type out your words. This feature does have its quirks in both S Voice and Siri, but is slowly being perfected.
Lastly, but most importantly, the most appealing thing about Smartphones these days are the apps available. The advantage Iohone has above other brands in the phoning business in the early foot they got into the industry of creating apps. Today, there is countless of apps around that can be bought or are free specifically for the Iphone, and its still growing. In fact, Apple has the most Apps in the whole Smartphone App business, but this could change depending on the success rate of the phones.
